THE ISAQ SOMALI DIASPORAand poll-tax agitation in KENYA 1936
No doubt many of us who frequented Somali websites revolted at the irrational outbursts, rage and hatred that Isaaq folks burst on to us. Well now you have an opportunity to delve into a historical overview of poll tax agitation back in the colonial era. The ISAQ in East Africa campaigned very hard to improve their status and pay extra money than the natives (Kenyans). They looked down on their African brethren and even other Somalis by claiming to be nonSomalis.
Ever since the Somali nationalism triggered by the struggle of our hero Sayid Mohammed Abdule Hassan, they have been on the look out to improving their status within the colonial framework even if it takes to the detriment and abandonment of their own people. What were they seeking? They were desperately looking an "Asiatic status" only to pay an extra amount of colonial taxation. One officer noted how they (Isaqs) were APING the Asians by claiming such status. (Slave mentality i must say)
Below is a telegram they sent to their masters.
"We Somalis (ISAQIS) have always tried our utmost to show our loyalty to the Union Jack. Thousands upon thousands of lives have been laid down for British flags in East Africa not to mention Mesopotamia. During the struggle with the Mad Mullah, we were fighting against our own countrymen but we realized we were fighting for an ideal government..This may not compare well to sacrifices of other parts of the Empire (British Empire) but it sure proved our LOYALTY"
It is a long journal and might take your precious time . It is worth reading and do learn history .

Ducaale004 Sadly, they looked down on their African identity and even Somali identity though the movement was a massive failure in the end. Nevertheless, for a short period, the campaign of Somali poll-tax agitation in Kenya was vaguely successful and received inside and outside support in the form of petitions, request letters from consuls of Hargeisa and Burco, and a civil protest in cities such as Isiolo, Nairobi and Nukuru .
Turton notes the failure of this movement as to the lack of Somali unity in the Diaspora and their segmentation into politically several opposing tribal groups. For example, according to this journal, the ISAQ often viewed Herti as an impasse to every one and political step ahead they tend to take over other Somalis in NFD. Herti who formed a majority in Cardiff, the largest Somali concentration in England prior to the WW2 and also in Kenya decided that it wasn’t in their best interest to form an alliance with Isaq, which could have assured them a subordinate position in all the social benefits the ISaq expected to had been accrued from this movement upon its successful outcome. Ineffective the joint was, the ISaq had recourse to placing their brothers at risk, reporting them as seditious and tax evaders of the British colony while emphasizing their historical loyalty and sycophancy. The author cites also the counter-accusations and the hush hush. It was all a matter of outmaneuvering and outperforming one another unaware of the corollary effect of favoritism and of adopting an identity that wasn’t’ our own. Sad History.

The Harti thought they could create a little Hartiland as part of an easy land expansion by paper. But any clever person would have realise this to be impossible.
Hence the ISaaq keeping it real by making their status just as those ppl from India and Pakistan. What is wrong with that?
If Hartis are saying they are sangadhuudhi(natives), go ahead. Who wants to stop u?
