Pondering the fascinating lost Gala civilization

Postby James Dahl » Tue Feb 26, 2008 11:10 pm

I have recently been considering a theory I have, that the writing on the ancient Gala graves and monuments of northern Somalia is an archaic, pre-Islamic dialect of Somali, written in South Arabian, an alphabet used in Yemen and Ethiopia from 600 BC to about 600 AD.

My theory is that the Yibir kingdom of Hargeisa of oral history and the Gala civilization are one and the same, and that they spoke the Yibir dialect of Somali (an archaic form) and wrote their dialect in South Arabian, due to their links to Yemen from a millenia of the incense trade.

If you know of any Gala writing on old rocks or monuments, I've put together a South Arabian to Somali transliteration key, if anyone is interested. Hopefully someday I can try to discover the lost cities of Mosyllon and Mundus.

Let me know if it works! I know there are lots of Gala sites especially near Hargeisa and in Sanaag.

Ok I don't have the specifics right now, but I'll tell u do the jist of it. I'll go dig up the shiribs later.

Lafa Gaala was the location of the battle between the Geledi and Gaala army. At that place the invading gaala army was destroyed and forced to retreat. Accordingly it says they wer forced all the way from that are Lafa Gaala all the way past Buur Hakaba, where they were again defeated by Eelaay a few years later.

The exact years isn't known but it was pretty long ago as Wacdaan wasn't fighting in the war.

Story goes after Lafa Gaala the Geledi defeated Hintire and Abgaal to establish itself as a power. This is the only war ever between Geledi and Abgaal.

I'll get the shiribs later, I'm not at home now.

Here's a map zoom in near Afgooye to see where LafaGaala is.

Do u know stuff about Geledi history?

Don't forget Gaalkacyo.

Also we worshiped the same Gods as the Galla like Waaq (El Waq, Abud Waq).

We shared similar cultures because we had the same root language, but we were slightly different (see my topic).

Paidmonk, "Waaq" does not delineate a specific deity. It is an old Cushitic word that JUST means "God". Ask any Oromo person, as I have, and they will translate for you. Their pagans can worship a spirit "Waaq" and their Muslims can say their lord is "Waaq" as we say "Ilaahay" for Allah.

It just means God, it does not delineate a specific deity.

Even if we did not have the same religious beliefs at the time, the "Waaq" theme is evident in Somali geography (town names). And since it has no meaning within our own circles in modern times, we must have a lot of Oromo influence or at least acknowledge that our present home has a lot of Oromo influence.

But lets not leave out the great possibility that Somalis and Galla worshiped the same deity. Most pagan belief systems are similar, especially those within distance of influencing one another.
