My local Iman said this war is fitnah talked great length about the struggle between the fourth caliphate the Ali Bin Abi Talib (ra) and Mu'awiyah and how the khawijites emerged during those periods.

He said according to nusus he said, the only role permited to be involved as a good muslim or scholar would be a mediating role (nasiah), he strongly discourage people among the congregation to take sides (The iman noted there was intense debates in the corridors of the masjid in the last few days for people supporting either side).

I understand that is possible but we are talking about the views of true religious knowledgeable folks not the pay as go wadaads like the Ahlul Sun wal jadeeco...

If you want to know such wadaads even Meles Zenawi has what he calls Islamic Majlis Al-aclaa which gives fatwas regarding every issue including the invasion of Somalia by the Ethiopians as being justified.
