IGAD's calls for sanctions against al shabab (viable??)

Postby JaMaaL-23 » Thu May 21, 2009 8:03 pm

COMMUNIQUE OF THE 33RD EXTRA-ORDINARY SESSION (EXTRA-ORD. No. 1) OF THE IGAD COUNCIL OF MINISTERS ON THE SECURITY AND POLITICAL SITUATION IN SOMALIA

After deliberating at length on the prevailing political and security situation in Somalia, the Council:

1. Notes with grave concern the current aggression in Somalia that has resulted in hundreds of deaths and the displacement of thousands of people, which has partly been exacerbated by an influx of foreign armed aggressors on Somalia.

2. Recognizes the fact that the assailants have used the porous borders of Somalia especially the airports at KM 50 and KM 90 to receive supplies of arms and ammunition, and personnel from their foreign backers, in this regard calls upon the UN Security Council to impose a no-fly zone, except for humanitarian purposes authorized by the government, on the airports of Kismayo, Baidoa, KM 50, Balidoogle, Waajid, Hudur, all airports in Gedo Region, Isaley and Johwar.

3. Calls upon the UN Security Council to impose a blockade on sea ports particularly Kismayo and Merka to prevent the further in-flow of arms and foreign fighters, in this regard urges the UNSC to reach out to the international naval forces present in the region to enforce the blockade.

These guys have enough weapons and ammo to keep fighting for the better half of another year. I don't see their capabilities diminishing because of new "sanctions", a return of the TPLF guided by trained Somali brigades backed up by NATO air power is another thing.

Xoogsade

since Alshabab control most of the South, any sanction against them is basically sanction against the poor Southern Somalis.

maxay galabsadeen.

Its better for Igad to fight against the Al shabab and take back the territory, if shabab is what they want, obviously thats not the case.

^ :lost:

The Amxaaro are already in Hiiraan and the so called government is loosing support and credibility by calling for ethiopia's help.

Wadanka alshabab wax u dhaama ma laha, and the Hawiye's are realising this the hard way.

Jamaal,

Without going into details, things really do like like they're shaping up like in '06...Like the ICU, these groups generally do not last long. Btw, who cares what a grouping of the worlds poorest nations say.

thats why I was so sceptical about their suggestions, nevertheless they made their intensions clear.

I hope they are not told to say this bythe West.

If we are seeing the 06 all over again, would you support the government if it brings the Ethiopians into the country?

Mind you this ha already happened in Hiiraan.

To be honest, I support any sort of Government, no matter what. That being said Shareef's Gov will not work due to a Reer Baadiye being in office. There will probably not be another Transitional Gov after this. The future is murky for Somalia.

Time is ripe for the ISIMO and Culumo to start a 100% Somali peace and reconciliation initiative under the tree.

Somalis should never support any Gov made in a Hotel ever again.

These arn't Culimo or anything. Its nothing more than a collection of select induviduals who get paid lots of money by Gulf Arabs to cause mayhem in a Country. Just because I'm blaming Shareef's incomptetness doesn't mean I'm on board with crazed teenagers. I think Somalia lost When Nuur Cadde didn't win the election as He was the most qualified by far

Golonjo Lion,

They fund chaos in Somalia while their own countries are rich as hell, and enjoying peace. Stupid skinnies take the money and do what they're told.
