Somali's are Lke Native Indians

Postby michael_ital » Wed Nov 18, 2009 10:17 am

Two lost Nations of people with no Nation. Why? Because they're still rooted in the old dinosaur ways in believeing that in order to move ahead "we need to go back to the old ways. The ways of our Ancestors".

In fact, the opposite is true. People need to evolve to survive and prosper.

At last count there were 564 native American Indian tribes recognized as indpendant nations by the US government. The challenge has been, in the face of an overwhelming foreign culture and numbers of immigrants, to hold onto enough of the various native cultures to maintain their separate identities.

Even as the dominant culture has whittled away at the edges of cultural separation, the tribes remain no more united now than they were during the colonial period and manifest destiny. I don't think it's so much a desire to go back in time as it is a desire to maintain the identity and separate cohesion of abtigiis and tolka. It is a primitive notion, but it was the only thing that worked for thousands of years.

Intermarriage and steady movement off the reservations is blurring tribal lines and changing expectations. Many current leaders went away to school, particpated in the dominant culture, and now operate within the Department of the Interior or the Bureau of Indian Afairs. The Native American Health Center here in Oakland (funded by the BIA and part of national public health) has been under Native control for all of the 32 years I have worked for them.

:P Michael, keep in mind: I have half-Cherokee cousins, and you are part Miq-Mak....... A degree of nostalgia is healthy, but there is no going back......

Good post Grant. And I DO maintain that sense of nostalgia. I agree it's healthy. But evolving doesn't always imply "turning white/gaalo". But many indigenous peoples see it as that, and hold those who do evolve up for ridicule. Somali's are famous for this. And that's sad. Which was more my point.

Irony does indeed get me through the day. To the thread opener, I wonder whats ticks you mate? Is this the fact an Italian canuck that you are lurks in Somali/Native Indian forums with great disdain and bumptiousness on your part!!! Duqa do you get a kick out of lurking in somali/minority forums as someone put it and I believe it was when one has mere Wazungu survival money, he or she tends to exercise their sadistic urges freely.
A chronic escapism if you ask me. Bal war ka keena Somali maryooleey idinkana?

Nothing but the truth. they all glorify their past for fathers and a lost glory, something that destroyed the Native America and other out dated generations. and they are angry with you because you tell them the truth.
Islam teaches us not to follow our fore fathers, but to think ahead and change with the times. It asks many times in the Quran "they say we follow our forefathers, but what if their forefathers were ignorants or lost"?
you addicted to the past, you will become part of the past.
