One thing is for sure Siad Barre had both during his tenure a bad and a good period in his rule, nothing was black and white. Stalin in the west is known as a genocidal leader who's policies were responsible for the kills of tens of millions of civilians. Despite this in Russia, he is graced as a leader who turned the Soviet Union into the most powerful state in the world and defended them against nazism.
Will you judge leaders based on what they left behind or the massive change they have created in a country.

if there was a credible oppistion then he should have left... but those who wanted him out where hynas power hungry and greedy look at what happened after he left? sxb the country was destroyed.there was only one man who could replace siyad berra Aun, that man was cigaal AUN but siyad barre knew that south somalia would never accept him as a president. cigal was the perfect leader to replace siyad berra. but look at what USC done to cigaal they threw him out of the picture and named ali mahdi as president the man who sold the somali coast to italian mafia to dump illigal chemicals.
True most of those who over threw siyad barre were no better than he was but i dont agree with if there was someone suitable person he would have stepped down

The man was ruling for 21 years there is no way he was going to just step down because there was someone there who could do his job. This is what his followers would argue but the honest truth is he did what most dictators do, let the country burn if his not going to rule. the same thing qadafi is doing now. usc were a rebel group that is it, their whole purpose was to get rid of him after they accomplished that they turned on each other. what do you expect from rebels. anyways that is another topic all together. either way if he did step down then there would have been no blame for him at all but since he was taken out by force there will always be those who accuse him of having some responsibility.

Also another mistake people make when looking at the legacy of siyad barre is they compare him to warlords. Of course he was better than any rebel group, the man had full control and because of this he will be judged harder.

Siad Barre is number one responsible for the Somali civil war. And I spit on Abdullahi Yusuf and Mohamed Aidid. The military played with our country.
