Shaking hands with the opposite gender

Postby XaliimoFarax » Tue Oct 11, 2011 6:10 pm

I hate it when a guy extends his hand to shake and I stand there like an idiot and quickly explain how I don’t shake hands with guys. Its even worst when there is a third party and they are introducing u to them its double embarrassment for him and me. :| This week alone two new guys started at work (over three quarters are male) and I did what I do best ‘smile and change the subject quickly’. I can just imagine what is going through their minds ‘extremist’

What do u do in sticky situations like this?

For females it can be written off, but for males who dont look like a red bearded Sheikh or a monk, for them its difficult to keep sincere and respectful while refusing to shake the hand of a woman.

HF, it's very awkward, But once you explain yourself, most of them understand. I know Someone who lost an awesome job, because she refused to shake hands with the manager, hommie hit the road la dhahay.

Dr Y is rambling again :-@

With that being said, I do it so I'm afraid I can't offer any advice in that regard. But In a lot of places they are aware of our religious obligation so for the most part you should be okay once you explain respectfully.

Same here if u have an office job its part of the workplace but as nabeela said if u explain urself they are cool never had anyone say anything negative to me nevertheless its awkward that first few minutes. Nabeela he fired her cos she wouldn’t shake his hand now that’s extreme

Idol - maybe from your side its not but u dont know whats going through his mind ;) Plus its forbidden in islam

I do it. And most Somali girls accept my hand and they shake hands with me. Even the hijabi ones.

I don't offer a handshake to other Muslim women though. I just say Hi and nod my head.

Damn all the cashiers of the world.
I used to ask them to place the change on the counter. Usually have to repeat it twice. Almost got into an argument with another customer cause of it.
