The Chronicles of Azania
THE CHRONICLES OF AZANIA
It suddenly was quiet. The Patriot delighted that the torrential downpour finally ended as he snuck out of his tent. The rainfall which had lasted for more than half a day ended as fast as it had started.
“Alhamdullilah, “he said as he began to make his way to the center of the camp where a large campfire managed to last even during the rain.
“Warya, Pat, bring the saliid macasaro ! Dinner is almost ready” said an elderly, balding man who was busy stirring a drum while smoking his Sportsman cigarette.
“Sawa, boss, whats for dinner ?”
“Cambuulo a la carte.”
“No, no, no cambuulo, Taliye. NO!”
“Warya, its all that you skinny caanbodhe drinking sons of bitches could afford. Talk to your adeer Yusuf to give us better rations.”
Visibly irritated, Patriot slugged off like a child scolded by his father. Patriot had eaten cambuulo for the past 3 weeks and was eager to eat something else. Times were tough for the rag tag force who had yet to receive any decent rations or salaries.
“Cot damn, cot damn,” he huffed as he returned with the saliid macsaro.
“Cheer up, adeer, things will get better,” replied the older man who didn’t mind eating the Baasto Hawiye day in and day out.
“When we reach Kismayo, we will eat meat, drink caano geel, have fresh fruits and vegetables.”
“Taliye, Abdiwahab, you always keep saying this every day. Dreams can not fill an empty stomach. I can’t have any more cambuulo.”
“Adeer, you are getting soft. At least we have cambuulo, when I was your age, we had nothing but caanoboodhe laced tea, and perhaps some white rice and we didn’t complain.”
“Yeah, yeah, adeer, but I miss eating good food. Where is the money from Nairobi going, Taliye ?”
“Pat, what money ? I am getting this cambuulo on credit, we owe so much money and there is not an isbaaro in sight for us to raise revenue.”
“What about the TFG ? Anything from there ?”
The old man burst into laughter and couldn’t help himself at the audacity of question asked by the young man.
“TFG, warya, we are considered outlaws. Meanwhile, we are stuck here in this focked up forest, being eaten alive by mosquitoes, stuck in mud, and all we got to eat are hopes. Our fortunes will change when we get to Kismayo.”
Taliye Abdiwahab dreamt of the fortunes to be made. He had been promised to be the Director of the Port and salivated at the coin he would squeeze out of the operation. So much coin, that he would make Cisman Caato seem like a welfare case.
“Boss, what is for dinner?” asked a young sentry who had returned from a scouting mission.
“Hilib Geel, bariis, and muufo !”
“Wallahi ?”
“Nah, mjinga, we got baasto hawiye with some hawiye wine !”
Guhaad was heartbroken. He had walked all day and was hoping to eat something that would fill his belly. He took off his knapsack, size 15 boots and laid his G-3 down before sitting down on a mat.
“What did you see out there ?”
“Taliye, nothing but refugees who were heading west. There was no enemy in sight. “
“Why didn’t you borrow a goat, cow, camel, or even a chicken ?”
“Pat, warya I am not a thief,” replied Guhaad who was the son of an Imam. He always tried to think he was the moral authority in the unit. Stuck between the Commander in Thief, and the adventurous sijuwi, Guhaad had to devise ways to maintain his moral values.
“I’d trade Azania for a goat right about now,” said Patriot.
“Shut up, and eat, ladies !” barked Taliye Abdiwahab. He thought what a bunch of sissies. How would they fight the enemy if they were fixated on complaining about what they ate ? They don’t make mooryaans like they used to.
The trio soon sat down and started to eat their dinner. In spite of the complaints, Guhaad and Patriot each ate three plates of cambuulo as Abdiwahab shared the rest with the motley crew of Azanians who soon converged on the mess hall like locusts on a farm. These men did not complain about their dinner and were more than eager to consume whatever was served to them. The fuusto was picked clean.
“What am I to do with such a sorry arse bunch of clowns ? How would they lead their men into battle against Devil’s spawn ? Ah, fock it, all I need is to run the port for 3 months and do a Farmaajo. 200km lies between me and $3million, $15,000 per kilometer,“ thought Taliye Abdiwahab. He smiled and lit another cigarette.
