I am not hearing you the leader of the Somaliland guurtiDuring colonial times, Somaliland virtually managed itself and the Gurti retained respect and authority. That has carried through to present times and Somaliland is stable with political parties and democratic elections. Twice, electoral disputes have reached crisis point in recent years. The detractors of Somalia don’t want a strong, unified nation which can defend its borders and exert its influence in Africa. They want Somalia to consist of small regional administrations with loosely connected tribal militias that ignore the edicts of the Federal Government to peruse short term gains. Somalia is not a nation divided along religious and linguist lines like Switzerland, nor is it a nation divided by any geography. It’s one flat stretch of desert with the same damned people living throughout it. Only arrogance and a blindness to the greater good is leading this nation on the track to becoming a permanent lackey to Ethiopia.

What minister was that and what restaurant?I realised that when I was having dinner with a minister at a restaurant in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. One of the waiters recognised my host and having delivered the food, decided to give the minister an earful. In most African countries, the man would have been dragged off to jail — or worse. But not only did the minister have to listen, he got to his feet and argued back. This was an argument between equals.
