The new Epidemic.
Within the the Somali community.
Guys with zero prospects, no means to provide for themselves let alone anybody else
Girls with high body counts that nobody will wife up, even their cousins said No.
These two groups are nearly 40% amongst the Somalis in diaspora. Lets hope for the best.

I really want to understand what is going on with the young men in the Somali community. Why do they lack ambition? I can understand older men who did not get the opportunity to get education but how do you explain a man knocking on his 30s, went through all the layers of his education/or dropped out yet can't leave his mom's low income housing?

What else would you expect from morons who have been living with their parents all their lives.

It's part of our culture tbh. It's socially acceptable to cook for, clean after, house, and in some cases, financially support males until they leave the nest.Shirib wrote:

If you just look at the older generation men in diaspora you will find groups that are chewing qat, constantly talk qabil nonsense in coffee shops, Lazy , unemployement, abandoning or neglecting families etc.
^All of this can effects the next &younger generation of men.
I am not putting down Somali men. Women also have a hand in raising them.

Re: The new Epidemic.
You have a point and it is really sad, because I bet those mother don't know any better. They had to flee their country and are themselves still trying to adjust. However, I would think that very situation/experiences growing up would spark them to be ambitious and do better than their parents did. I see so many young men who want to be husbands, fathers, own business yet they are unwilling to work hard, put a plan together (a realistic plan) to get to where they want to get. It is all talk. On contrast, plenty of gaalo folks are raised by single moms/dads and do well for themselves...this whole role model excuses is really not making sense to me anymore. Maybe Somalis are just inherently lazy and corruptShirib wrote:Their mothers baby them, they have no role models to look up toSummerRain wrote:I really want to understand what is going on with the young men in the Somali community. Re: The new Epidemic.
Yes and it has some detrimental effects. You see some grown guys who have never washed a dish or poured themselves a cup of shaah. All the responsibility in the household was given to the girls while the guys they did absolutely nothing. Even in employment while a lot of times an income a girl earns is used to help the family, the guy spends it on stupid things like shoes, car, etc. So the guy has no sense of work ethic and to a certain extent self worth. They have no responsibilities, no drive and ambition. Because they don't have any responsibilities and no sense of need in the household often times they'll seek this fulfillment in the streets. Start running with the wrong crowds. Reason why you see so many more Somali women being successful in the west than us women.Lillaahiya wrote:It's part of our culture tbh. Well at least that's my two cents on it.

I agree in parts with Lilaahiya and shirib . Somalis in general terms also don't kick their kids or family members out

Re: The new Epidemic.
I may sound totally ignorant here but...if a young boy/man living in his parents house isn't fixing dinner, washing his own clothes, doing his bed in his HOUSE...what else is he doing?
What are some child raising philosophies in Somali families? We were raised to be skilled in being able to do household chores, have responsibilies so when we are adults we could function in the outside world. Mom and Dad arent doing to be going things all your life. By the time we were teens all house bills were our responsibilities, we had to work out a system without our parents interfering.

Re: The new Epidemic.
depends on the family . For me for example I have always been a spoiled kid so I have kind of expected to always get my way , only to painfully understand that it really didn't work like thatWhat are some child raising philosophies in Somali families?
