No its not. It's just sunnah to follow it but you aren't forced to like or do everything he does.

This also reminds me of it supposedly being obligatory for Muslims to love the Prophet more than their own parents. I don't even know how this is possible.

Walking fast, faces pass and I'm hell bound. Staring blankly into the fire, just burning my way, just burning my way..... in the ashes

It isnt mandatory but it is sunah as in it is recommended. And yes you to do have love the prophet more than your parents. I dont know what is so impossible about that. I think you should study the prophets life and you will come to realize that it makes sense.

I don't "love" myself more than my own parents

I am sorry but whoever says they love the Prophet more than their parents are lying. It's impossible to have that much of a personal affection for someone you've never met. He lived over a 1000 years before us and we dont know how he looks like or how he sounds. You have to have a personal relationship to love someone. We know nothing of him other than what the religion tells us. Of course Muslims respect him more than their parents for obvious reasons but not love more than their parents. People who say they love the prophet more than their parents are liars. Plain and simple. Sorry to be blunt. Maybe those really religious sheikhs but not the average Muslim.

Titanium did you know the prophet pbuh said "None of you have true faith until he loves me more than his mother and his father and his children"? I think you can find this in one of the bukhari collections. Still want to argue?
