The hoopty advantage

Postby Lillaahiya » Thu Jul 25, 2013 12:18 pm

The (only) advantage of owning a hoopty is that you're forced to learn a lot about cars/auto parts as well as developing a friendship with your mechanic since you're at his/her shop every 2 months :wow:

Does the mechanic give you discounts at least?

Mechanics love women since they can easily bamboozle them.

^ It's not a specific model. It just means a busted up or old car.

I see. I hate old cars. If it needs more than tire replacement, and regular maintenance then it's time to trade in.

My Mechanic is a unscrupulous short tempered lebonese so you know we are good friends. I get brakes changed 20 dollars a piece + 20 for each one labor. I got my broken window replaced 100 dollars including labor (mexican labor), I can get new radiator and labor 150, new tires, batteries, name it and I get it done at a fraction of the cost.

 I'm pretty sure my mechanic is Lebanese too. My mom's is Egyptian.

Sometimes it's cheaper to buy the parts and just pay for the labour.

I only take my car to the mechanic if the engine breaks down or it needs wheel alignment, everything else I do it myself, but luckily my crappy Jeep Wrangler rarely requires maintenance. :blessed:

I got tired of the headache of used cars. I just got a new car in 2011 and make payments and only worry for the basic routine maintenance.

Yhh no he doesn't charge me for parts he even tells me to go pick it up under his shop name so I get it at his price. He always has some fob working for him so you know they are cheap. He also has a network of Mexicans who do everything for super cheap god bless them, cuz I love them. Do you guys have Mexicans in Canada?

Last monthe I nneeded my rotors changed and was looking at 50 each at those parts stores, then he sent me to the whole sale dealers that sell to the parts stores andi got it for 20 each bisinka. Got it replaced for 50 labor spending only 90 at what could of been 300 at the professional mechanics.

That's what I meant; going to whole sale shops to buy parts and just pay for labour. Your services/parts are a lot cheaper than what we pay though.

Yeah there's Mexicans here. Usually migrant workers who get paid less than minimum and they work for constructions, farms, maids, etc. They're given 3-4 year contracts and are ineligible to apply for a Canadian PR/citizenship. They also pay into taxes but don't get E.I., health care, access to social housing and a lot of other services :(

Proper if you have a permanent job however the car loses value once you drive it off the lot and your insurance is more expensive. Plus you'll be in the same boat as people w/used cars after 4-5 years. Enjoy the basic maintenance while it lasts
