LAGOS, Nigeria, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- The Royal Dutch Shell Group PLC evacuated some 330 employees from four Nigerian sites after an attack by gunmen.
Nigerian soldiers fought the heavily armed gunmen, believed to be Ijaw militants, who assaulted the Benisede pumping station from boats, the BBC reported Monday. The militants want a greater share of Nigeria's oil wealth.
Before the evacuations, five Shell workers were injured and there are unconfirmed reports that some soldiers and gunmen died in the firefight.
Last week, two attacks cut production by about 220,000 barrels per day and left four workers kidnapped. Those workers remain hostage, officials said.
