Mandatory Hijab

Postby Steeler [Crawler2] » Mon Apr 23, 2007 5:18 am

In Iran, Hijab must be worn by all women. There is no exception for non-Muslims or visitors. This would seem to be the inverse of some western lawmakers who ban hijab.

I was led to believe that non-Muslims are not subject to Muslim constraints and that they may live in accordance with their social norms. Is what Iran is doing against the basic tenets of Shari'a?

Thoughts?

Iranians have their own Shia Shariah tradition derived from their separate Hadith compilations. I haven't the slightest idea on what their opinion on appropriate non-Muslim women's dress.

^^^
does that mean we should be subject to anti-hijaab laws?

surely, above all should be the right to choice for women and men alike... it's quite an intrusion on the female body that governments hold sway over what a woman may or may not wear. of course modesty and decency should be preferred, but no one should be forced to give up their religious attire, nor should anyone be forced to wear it.

Mad Mac, why discuss Iran when the clear majority of this board are Sunni?

MAD MAC,

Good point here. I didn't know it is mandatory to the non-muslims. I never heard of where Islam forces others to practice Islam Sharia law, before.

This is apparently what happens when tolerance is not the watchword. In western societies women should be allowed to wear what they want, and that includes hijab. The inverse should also be true in other societies. Why is it that people are always trying to tell other people what to do and how to do it under the guise of "good for society"?

Hijab is a Personal (or Common) Law thing under Sunni Shariah. And non-Muslims are not subject to Muslim Personal Law. There is, however, one set of Shariah derived Criminal Law under which all citizens are subject to.

OK, I am curious here.

Where does fornication sit in all this? Because in Western civilization it normal. Is that personal law, or criminal law? I would assume alcohol and pork consumption fit under personal law as well.

As I understand it, fornication falls under Criminal Law with a maximum punishment of 80 lashes.

Seems we would have a fundamental conflict there, as I am a serial fornicator.

Don't be anywhere near the crime scene long enough for four upstanding witnesses to turn up, and you'll be fine.
