I don't think tourism is going to yield prosperity for Somalia.

First of all, we don't have any resorts or a good image, and to have such resorts peace would be a start...next you need to identify your unique selling point? What do we have to offer foreign tourists?

If you want to see wild animals there are better countries, since we have lost our stalk to poachers and the war...

If you want sandy beaches, there are many out there....besides ours has nuclear waste and too many sharks....

If you want shopping or activities? Hellooo, Somalia doesn't have any of that to offer....

If you want to see sites or are into culture and art, you're not about to find any of that in Somalia as it is right now...

we don't even have decent mountains to help with the marketing, it'll be tough developing Somalia as a hot tourist destination. I think the way to get Somalia out of the ashes is to have peace, a development plan and a lot of investment
Obviously this is true, but what to invest in?
There are many possibilities, but the ones that should be pursued are those that will have lasting benefits.
National Parks have to be re-organized. We have wildlife that is very isolated and needs to be protected.

Sanitation engineering also comes to mind, the environment does need to be another thing address first

^ good idea

the main cause of clan wars is water....

you always hear about that clan fighting that clan for some small well with disgusting water.

The environment should be the main priority

Desalination is expensive on a large scale, especially in energy costs. That's fine if you're Saudi or Dubai, but Somalia doesn't have that kind of cash or access to cheap oil.

There are solar desalination options that have been explored recently. This would be good for Somalia as well:

Cheaper, and uses a free resource that Somalia has lots of: Sunlight!

warya dude- that sea farming is a great idea for somalia especially the desert parts like bari
it would be amazing! hope someone starts that one day...

u just create a little river that gets the sea water from the ocean flowing into the desert crop area and then back again to the ocean, its like a cycle.

Technology has not yet advanced for large scale Solar power but it can be used small scale.
Somalia already has the ideal power source for small scale rural use.

Biodiesal.

There are many options but the ideal one for somalia is Jatropha.
it grows in marginal areas and needs little water and no fertilizer, and it grows where you cannot grow crops, so you will not be wasting good farmland.

The Tree's themselves will fight desertification and the fruits will provide oil for diesel, and other products like soap and candles. the seeds when crushhed into amash make excellent fertillizer.

IF india is consodering jatropha to power its trains, we can use it in water pumps for irrigation,
for electricity in diesel generators.

We can tie this up with water managment, through dams, and other forms of rain water catchment, like damming empty wadis, and draining them towards underground qanats towards storage tanks.

When we get rains, these empty wadis become full through flash floods, and then within a few weeks or months they are empty again through evaporation. Miilion of tonnes of water could be saved with these methods, and using local products,
maybe one bulldozer and thats all.

Low tech and simplicity is what we should be going for.
I think the problems in Somalia are all caused because the interests of districts and clans are causing disputes due to the "all or nothing" power structure in the country.

Why not divide Somalia up into Cantons, effectively independent states inside a "Somali League", like the Swiss do.

Each city with more than 100,000 people are declared a Canton, with its own elected council, which is elected once a year. Each Canton in turn is divided into Districts for every town or neighborhood with more than 10,000 people, with significant autonamy.

Every month, each District and Canton would send a representative to a great "Shirweyne", which every month would be hosted in a different Canton. Disputes and agreements between cantons and districts would be resolved in these meetings.

A president would be elected once every year by the Shirweyne, who would carry out the ceremonial duties of the head of state. Someone can be president only once.

The Prime Minister would be elected once every 5 years by an election in all the Cantons, who would deal with national and international issues that affect the country as a whole. The cantons still have direct control over all other aspects of the country, and the prime minister reports to the cantons at the Shirweyne every month with the state of the nation. The Shirweyne outranks both the president and the prime minister.
James what about this..

how about pushing this further and also devolve economic power more efficiently to those cantons.
Why not have each canton create and manage its own local currency through some sort of Hybrid Stamp Scrip/LETS system. and a Credit union and currency authority to manage the local economy.

a National currency which is interest free could be used to trade inter-cantons and internationaly.
and managed by a federal currency authority.
this should initially be kept simple, but we may allow it in future to evolve into a self regulating chaordic system much like the current world wide credit card system, and we can do away with the federal currency authority.

I think the first thing to do is to develop a simple yet effective banking system throughout the country along with an independant monetary body. Then we should encourage people to reduce their consumption and start saving up in said banks, I know it might as well be wishful thinking but that is how the Tiger Economies of SE Asia started out. By encouraging saving, banks will have enough money to fully operate and start the processes of lending to small businesses. That will provide for jobs and people will be earning more money which in turn will have a positive effect on demand for goods and services and eventually a market will be created for new products and economy will flourish. Another thing is to concentrate the Goverment Expenditure on infrastructure projects instead of other things which will worsen the people off at first but will eventually lead to growth as new projects need workers (unemployment decreases) and workers will be spending their wages locally (increased demand, good for local businesses) and all that will set a multiplier effect throught the country/region.

The Monetary body will be responsible of monitoring inflation rates, setting annual targets and setting interest rates. We need to have a stable, strong, currency for foreign companies to be attracted to us. A fixed exchange rate system should be adapted at start and as the economy stablises we should shift to a floating exchange rate.

A huge problem that the Govt must deal with is the Qat problem. We should atleast try and grow our own Qat so we keep as much hard currency as we can, and the money people spend on it will be circulating inside the country instead of losing it to Ethiopia/Kenya.

As the world moves to renewable energy, our (said) oil will lose alot of its exporting value, depending on ease of extraction, we need to use it locally to support our industrial base and day to day needs.

Great topic people, keep it going!
