Maakhir: Coast guards seize pirates Dhoftinle, Sanaag

Postby neocon_2007 » Sat Oct 25, 2008 11:16 pm

Laasqoray, Oct 24, 2008 (DhaharOnline) Local coast guards in Sanaag have seized pirates and their boats on the shores of Dhoftinle, a small town near Laasqoray.

Two speed boats and a handful of armaments were seized by the coast guards, according to the chief officer of Sanaag regional arm, Abdullahi Omar Ashur.

The pirates are now in custody and will be transfered to the central jail of the city of Badhan.

"They will be tried and sentenced," (see pictures of arrested pirates and their equipment) says the commissioner of Sanaag coast guard, a sub-branch of the security establishment in Sanaag/Maakhir.

"We are deeply saddened by the spate of pirate activities off the Somali coast," says Mohamed Hassan Tar, the commissioner.

A French Navy has captured 6 other pirates on the coast of Bari region and handed them over to the Puntland administration.

The International Maritime Bureau reported 75% rise of piracy activities off the coast of Somalia and urged immediate international response.

Somali pirates justify their actions as collecting license fees and taxes.
