Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam’s book (the first of three volumes) entitled Tiglachin: A History of the Ethiopian People’s Revolution Struggle is the first personal, even official, account of the tumultuous events of the Ethiopian revolution.
The book’s significance lies in the fact that it is written by a participant and the leading figure of the revolution. As such readers have the rare opportunity of approaching the revolutionary experience from the perspective of the man who was at the helm of political and military power between 1975 and 1991.
On the other hand, the publication of the book will be a significant contribution to the body of literature on the Ethiopian revolution and the revolutionary experience in the ‘Third World.’ More perspectives means more opportunities for a very nuanced understanding of a complex historical process such as the Ethiopian revolution instead of the often simplistic and consequently obfuscating interpretations that are characteristic of many accounts of the 1970s and 1980s.
In addition, the book offers a description of larger historical developments in the Horn of Africa in the 1970s, particularly the consequential Ethio–Somali war. One can arguably trace the roots of the collapse of the Somali state to the war and especially to the disastrous consequence of the war.
For the publisher, Mengistu’s book represents its maiden venture into the field of Amharic book publishing, which will ultimately form an important part of its publishing undertaking. Tsehai Publishers will issue the remaining two volumes and has already started the translation of the first into English. This will broaden the reach of the book beyond the Ethiopian community into English readers
