Somalia recalls its ambassador from Kenya

Postby Substance » Sun Apr 27, 2014 3:37 pm

In protest over the recent arrest of Somali consular to Kenya, Somalia’s ambassador to that country Mohamed Ali Nur (Ameeriko) has returned home on Sunday after the federal government recalled him.

Ambassador Ameeriko was highly received at Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle international airport by deputy foreign minister Mahad Mohamed Salad and key other government officials, a little while before midday on Sunday.

The recalled ambassador told a press conference upon arrival at airport that Somali government ordered him to return home immediately to give more explanation about the consular’s arrest and in generally the living standards of Somalis in Kenya.

“We have recalled the ambassador to back home to consult with him about what reaction the Somali government will take about the arrest of our consular in Nairobi on Friday” Deputy foreign minister Mahad Mohamed Salad told a joint news conference at the airport on Sunday.

Earlier on Friday, Kenyan forces raided the home of Somali consular in Nairobi and arrested him for more than 5 hours, before he was released after successive efforts by Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Ameeriko).

This was part of the massive arrests targeting Somali community in Kenya including Kenyan born ethnic Somalis, but Somali parliament speaker said Saturday that the detention of such high profile diplomat was unacceptable.
