The 'Somali pirates' who are not what they seem

Postby Yohannes » Tue Apr 02, 2013 5:07 pm

Somali pirates have kidnapped hundreds of people and cost millions in ransom payments. Jamal Osman finds journalists keen to interview them do not always get what they bargained for.
The "fake pirates", including Adan, are not even Somalis. Many of them are Kenyan. Many are Boran, an ethnic group that lives in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya.

Adan and his friends also pretend to be pirates. They fool journalists by giving interviews, and they get paid for their services.

“We pretend because we have the talent,” Adan says in the Channel 4 documentary. “You know, western guys they think the Africans are fools. But we have discovered we are not fools. We are much cleverer than the western people. We are fooling them, but they think they are fooling us.”
