Who and What are the Salaf?

MujahidaFiSabililah BRO OR SIS, J'KAIR YOU UNDERSTAND RIGHT. MASHALLAH THE SALAF WERE PIOUS GOD FEARING PEOPLE AND THEY FOLLOWED THE QURAN AND SUNNAH TO ITS BEST FORM POSSIABLE AND ALHAMDULILAH WE AS MUSLIMS SHOULD BE DOING THAT, BUT INSHALLAH WE ARE FOLLOWING THE WAY OF THE SUNNAH WHICH SHOULD BE THE WAY OF THE SALAF 'PROPHET S.A.W AND HIS COMPANIONS BUT WHO SAID THAT WE MUST CALL OURSELVES SALAFI?...ITS JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL SUFIS, THEY MASHALLAH WERE PISIOUS PEOPLE IN THEIR TIME BUT WHO TOLD THEM TO CALL THEMSELVES THAT, YET THEY CHANGED AND DISTORTED. SUBHANALLAH, WE SHOULD FOLLOW THE QUR'AN AND SUNNAH AS STATED IN THE QUR'AN SURELY ALLAH S.W.T KNOWS BEST OUR INTENSION, Y DO U NEED TO CLARIFY IT AND SPREAD IT 2 PEOPLE?....INSHALLAH, IF YOU WANT TO GIVE DAWAH TO A PEOPLE YOU MUST SEE THEIR WEAKNESSES FIRST, FOR SOME PEOPLE IN THIS FORM ITS THE BASIC FIVE PILLARS IN ISLAM. AND EVERYTHING ELSE SHOULD COME AFTER, NO OFFECE TO THE POST MAKER, BUT YOU SEEM TO BE PROMTING, BECAREFUL IT COULD LEAD TO PRIDE. BUT ALLAH S.W.T KNOWS BEST.
ALLAH CALLED US MUSLIMS, AND ORDERED US TO FOLLOW HIS MESSENGER S.A.W SUNNAH AND MAY WE DIE UPON THAT INSHALLAH. SO WHATEVER METHODOLGY AND FIQH FROM OUR BELOVED IMANS MAY ALLAH BE PLEASED WITH THEM, IS JUST A SOURCE OF GUIDENCE. AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST

Salamu alaykum sisters/brothers.

a salafi is someone who follows the sunnah and practices the deen as the first generation of muslims (The prophet (saw) and his companions) practiced it. and avoid all innovation (bidca)

The prophet (saw) said the best the of muslims are my generation, the generation after them and the generation after them..ie the first 3 generations of muslims.

everyone should try and follow the sunnah of the prophet (saw). He is our example and the best of us are those who follow his way of life.

however i don't think they should label themselfs as "Salafis", like other sects who label themselves as "sufis", "Hanifis" "Hanablis" etc etc..this only created more divisions and more confusions to people who don't understand the differences between these Madhabs and for non-muslims

we all muslims and sunnis, we should follow the sunnah and avoid innovations without labeling ourselves as anything other than sunni muslims.

he believes in the sunna of the prophet(pbuh) like the rest of us, he just defined the meaning of the word 'salaf' for us, right???

This all sounds quite confusing, i've always thought what miss aaqli said:

So my understanding is that all Sunni Muslims are Salafis, its just that some practice and some don't. But for some reason some people call themselves Salafis instead of just Muslims, which in turn confuses people, Muslims and non Muslims alike cos it sounds like Sunni Muslims and Salafi Muslims are two different groups, when in fact its the same thing. We all believe in Allah (swt) and we all follow the Sunnah so why lable yourself cos when you do, you start to talk like "us" and "them" and then the division kicks in within Muslims SubhanAllah.

Endure4Allah, sis i agree with everything you say about Islam and inshaAllah i will learn alot from your topics (mashaAllah keep them up) cos you're following the sunnah, but i just don't agree with calling yourself Salafi and not just Muslim

I'm confused! Iv never heard this term 'salafi' b4 and iv read quite a bit of litrature. Endure4Allah Can u name the books u have been reading please so we can see 4 ourselves. Not that i'm doubting u i'd just like 2 c for myself. Iv also read about the practises of wahbism and i was a bit comfortable with some of it. According to the Prophet saw we should follw the sunnah and do as he did but there are alot of different inclusions in wahbism such as some chanting after prayers. I think we should stick to what we no and avoid wot we have doubts in my opinion. I agree with Bint_Adan there are already to many seperatists in Islam we're all muslim and should stand united.

i know it's one of the four schools of thoughts, which are all sunnis at then end of the day, i was talking about the need to label different groups when they are all sunnis.

the salaf are not to be confused with the modern day salafi-jadeedah.. or neo-salafi's. the pricks that go around talking about alligience to banu saud and the apostate regimes.

bint adam mashallah u hit the nail, thats what i mean. as sunnis we are following the way of the salaf alhamdulilah but im not calling myself a salafi. im just upon the quran and sunnah.
...AND imam abu hanifa, imam malik, imama ahmed ibn hambal and imam shaf'i were imams of explaning hadith, but after several years people started to call themselves by their names in following which in actual fact does divide people.
why are some people confused...the deen is simple alhamdulilah..follow the quran, the prophet s.a.w sunnah and the sahih..meaning authentic hadith that all the imams agreed on.
