Garowe Online Investigative Journalism

Postby MrSinister » Mon Jun 21, 2021 10:43 am

GO has been doing some amazing investigative journalism work lately. It’s turning to into the New York Times of the Horn of Africa.

Here’s a recent article on Fahad yassin

Among Skinny news sites, Caasimada has the best investigation journalism. Garowe Online, is respectable second, and the third is the widely popular Puntlandi.

GO looks way more professional and modern. They’ve even been doing Twitter Spaces discussions with presidential candidates and others. I also think it’s more diaspora friendly and they’ve put effort in their English section.

Cite 3 to 4 reasons why it’s better.
1. News are available in Somali/English, only in English with GO which gives credence that it's foreign owned/oriented. News cover every region & wherever Somalis live (Africa, N. America, Europe, ME, etc), unlike GO.
2. Breaking news are reported within several minutes, while it could take hours or days with GO.
3. It's very competitive & self-sufficient as tens thousands visit it daily, while fewer visit GO which also solicit donations just to stay afloat.
4. It allows copy/pasting, unlike GO.

GO seems to be trying to cater to a younger diaspora audience that mostly communicate in English. I doubt either is self sufficient and make enough money from ad revenue. Even a big newspaper like the guardian asks for donations, it’s a way to get money from supporters.

Why would they allow copying and pasting? That’s allowing people to steal content.

GO is what happens when a public medium is privately owned by contemporary politically active people.

It can never be and is not for The Common Good.

Before someone argues, when we have Twitter suspending the medium after Faroole's son is caught switching back and forth between his private account and GO public account, it is already a serious (and even DISQUALIFYING) ethical and moral breach between something claiming constitutional and free speech protections from regulation as an independent public medium and a privately owned, privately ran for profit enterprise subject to consumer protection laws.

The media motto "independent" isn't just independent from government control (state-owned) but also independent FROM who runs the business (editorially independent).

If the medium is just a different "log in" for a private entity, it is literally the scenerio used by ALL AUTHORITARIAN AND ANTI-FREE SPEECH MONOPOLIES justifying their attack on the media as a public medium.

I mean I want you to understand this carefully.

What GaroweOnline has displayed itself to be is EXACTLY what authoritarians justify as a reason for ending all private ownership of the media.

Now of course the authoritarians are ridiculous, but so is GO's abuse and manipulation of the liberties of claiming to be a public medium ridiculous.

No single person who cares about journalistic ethics and freedoms in service of the Common Good can be happy about a blatant bad faith actor like GO.

GaroweOnline should reorganize itself internally and draft strict ethical and journalistic independence guidelines to ensure organizational integrity.

All news organizations have political leanings. It’s just in Somalia, Our politics isn’t left or right, but clan and regional politics. That being said, you’re right about the need for journalistic independence. Even if you lean one way or another, you shouldn’t manufacture stories. I don’t believe GO does that.

No, this is not about editorial position or ideology (conservative, liberal, libertarian, religious values, etc).

There is no identifiable position or ideology from GaroweOnline.

It strictly adheres to the personal political views of its owners.

It is not illegal to do that, but many of the rules successfully applied on public media all over the democratic world are essentially to limit something like that from claiming to be a public medium.

You can do that as a private [propaganda] business entity which then brings in public consumer protection.

The point is civilized society does not consider how GO functions as something "positive" for society.

As for manufacturing stories, I am sufficiently lacking enough confidence in the integrity of its role in the "missing" soldiers in Tigray story that I would reserve all judgement on this until I see something like an independent investigation exonerate it.

Well, 'younger diaspora audience' require up-to-date or latest news, which GO doesn't deliver. Caasimada doesn't solicit donations 'cause it gets far more (90% vs 10%) traffic than GO. GO's stats has been flat for a long time, perhaps even since its inception. Only time would tell if it can continue to operate.

Just need every 1 to recognize they r tribal partisans for semi secessionist province of Puntland. Wouldn't make a difference if GO turns editorial control from Farole son to unrelated partisan with the same tribal agenda

Mr boon I am grateful you removed the Somaliland and isaaq mask and now willing to go after your jeparti cousins openly.

The tactics of small darods such as those from lascanood and garbaharay is that they pretending to be hawiye, isaaq, etc to bash their fellow darods aka the dhabacyo and cagdheer. The only problem is you are caught quickly.
