Zimbabwe: Court grants bail for opposition member Biti Fri. June 27, 2008 02:25 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) A Zimbabwe court on Thursday granted bail for opposition number two Tendai Biti, who has been held in jail on vote-rigging and subversion charges and faces the death penalty, his lawyer said.
"We have been granted bail by the High Court and ordered to surrender Z$1-trillion (about R858-million) with the clerk of courts as part of the bail conditions," Lewis Uriri said.
"We've also been asked to surrender title deeds to his house and that he should report once a week to the police."
Uriri said he was on his way to the prison to free Biti, who is secretary general for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe's skyrocketing inflation rates - officially at more than 165 000 percent - make it impossible to convert the currency. - Sapa-AFP
