South Africa: Eight people killed in car crash in Johannesburg Mon. June 30, 2008 02:09 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) Police said a one-year-old baby is among eight people killed in accident during a high speed car chase on the M1 South in Johannesburg on Monday.
"Police became suspicious of a silver-grey Toyota Corolla, with five occupants, parked at a Sasol garage in Booysens around 1.30am," said police spokesperson Captain William Mpondo.
"However, It sped off along the M1 when approached by police."
On the Xavier offramp, the vehicle collided head-on with a Renault Cleo with five occupants.
All five people in the Renault died at the scene.
Three people in the Toyota also died at the scene. Two were taken to Baragwanath and Milpark hospitals in critical conditions.
The road has been closed.
Mpondo said motorists should use an alternative route.
