(SomaliNet) Soldiers in Mauritania have overthrown the government and have announced a new junta, which will be led by the head of the country's presidential guard.

A brief announcement read over state television says the "state council" will be led by presidential guard chief General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz. It gave no other details.

The news came after army officers staged a coup early on Wednesday. The presidential spokesperson says the coup took place after the president and prime minister fired the desert country's top four military officials. - Sapa-AP
