Mozambique: Ex-minister arrested over alleged embezzlement

(SomaliNet) Almerino Manhenje, Mozambique's former interior minister has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of millions of dollars during his time in office, independent SOICO television reported.
The Mozambican ex-minister, who served as home affairs minister in the Joaquim Chissano administration between 1996 and 2005, was arrested on Monday with seven unnamed senior officials from the same ministry, the station reported.
In December 2005, Manhenje's successor, Jose Pacheco under President Armando Guebuza, told reporters that an audit of the ministry had revealed an $8,8-million (about R70-million) deficit that could not be accounted for.
In his 2005 election manifesto President Guebuza promised to crack down on corrupt officials and attract investors to the coastal southern African country.-AFP
