Tanzania: Comoros President to address Tanzania’s National Assembly
Mon. August 25, 2008 06:06 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) As Tanzania’s parliament resumes its business after the weekend recess, President of the Comoros Mohammed Abdallah Sambi will address the house today Monday.

The Comoros leader will give his address after the question and answer session, according to the timetable issued by the Speaker’s office.

However, it was not known exactly what Sambi was going to talk about, though analysts in Tanzanian believe the Comoros President would use the House to thank Tanzanians for their contribution to restore order in his country.

In March this year, Tanzanian soldiers took part in the African Union mission to depose rebel leader Mohammed Bacar who had illegally declared himself president of Anjouan, one of the major islands forming the federation of the Comoros.

The Comoros is made up of four islands-Grand Comoro (Ngazija), Moheli (Mwali) and Anjouan (Anzwuani)-each with its own president but all fall responsible to the Union president. Mayotte (Mahore), which is the fourth still remains under the French.

Tanzanian and Sudanese troops in collaboration with Comoros soldiers made a smooth landing on Anjouan in late March forcing Col Bacar to flee to Mayotte, a nearby island under the French administration.

He is now living in exile in Re-union, also under France and the Comoros administration had ever since been pleading to France to send him back so that he can face justice.

When addressing the Parliament last week President Kikwete commended AU troops for the job well done, saying the operation to depose the rebel leader dubbed `operation democracy in the Comoros` was done professionally.

Nobody was killed during the operation which took hardly a day and there were no causalities.

Anjouan people went to polls in June and elected Azzali Assoumani as their leader.-Guardian
