Somalia: Reopening of Mogadishu's airport welcomed

(SomaliNet) The people in the Somalia capital and other southern towns have cordially welcomed on Saturday the reopening of Mogadishu’s main airport after the first airplane of chartered by Arab League flew from the airport yesterday in 11 years picking up Islamic Courts delegates to Sudanese capital Khartoum.

“This is very hopeful step made by Islamic Courts and it will certainly help the life back to its normal,” Abdiqani Hussein, one of local residents in the capital told Somalinet.

Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the executive Council of Islamic Courts (CIC) who addressed the airport said this is historical moment and Somali people should thank their Allah for his bless and work with Islamic courts to reach durable peace and stability.

“The Islamic courts made an amazing change in the capital after they dared to reopen the long closed airport and we (the society) are very much appreciated to see public services back,” one of former employee of Mogadishu airport Ali Mohamud said adding “I hope to back on my work if the remaining tasks are finished successfully,”

The public in many towns in southern Somalia have described the reopening of the Mogadishu main airport as good step done by Islamic Courts in more than decade. Somalia enters a new are and it will be back to the world stage, local official said.

The Islamists declared that the airport is open and it will soon start its work expecting all planes will use it temporarily while the repairing would be underway.

Mogadishu international airport has been close since the withdrawal of the international forces in 1995 when rival faction leaders disagreed the public service.

US led troops in Somalia in 1992-1994 have fought supporters of late General Mohamed Farah Aideed in which the Washington lost 18 elite soldiers in street battle with Aideed’s militia October 3, 1993.
