Somalia: Pirates almost capture American luxury cruise ship Sat. November 05, 2005 12:21 pm. -
 Spirit | Somali pirates tried to capture a luxury cruise ship "Seabourn Spirit" carrying 150 passengers and 160 crew members off Somalia today. The ship owned by Miami, USA based Seabourn Cruise Lines was traveling from Alexandria, Egypt to Mombassa, Kenya when two boats full of men armed with rocket propelled grenades (RGP) and other weapons attacked it inside Somalia waters. Most passengers are believed to be from USA, Canada and Australia.
No one was injured and the ship escaped capture by outrunning gun totting pirates. It is now rerouted the Seychelles Islands.
Almost thirty ships have been hijacked in Somalia waters in the past several months, making it the most dangerous in the world.
Pirates who spoke with Somalia media by high frequency radios in the past claimed to be no more than vigilantes who are defending Somalia coastlines from foreign companies who often over fish and others who dump industrial toxic waste Somalia’s territorial waters.
United Nation’s latest report on Somalia mentioned greedy pirates who hijack ships for ransom money. It also highlighted how multi-national corporations abuse Somalia’s rich waters.
