Somalia "Dont assent to the media bill"- President Yusuf urged
Thu. March 27, 2008 04:37 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) Arguing that it "blatantly violates press freedom and freedom of expression," a regional rights body, the Network of African Freedom o f Expression Organisations(NAFEO), has urged Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed "not to assent to the media bill" recently passed by the country's parliament, NAFEO said Wednesday in a press communique made available to the press.

The "new law contravenes international legal in struments which guarantee press freedom, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights," the Accra-based rights body said.

"The law is also likely to limit media organisations' operat ions by compelling existing organisations to register with the Minister of Information," according to NAFEO.

The rights body also recalled that "in addition to several conditions imposed on the foreign media operating in the country, the law undermines the independent s elf-regulatory mechanism by excluding press freedom and civil society organisati o ns from the National Media Council."

"Somalia is one of the most dangerous places in the World for journalists. In 20 07, eight media workers were killed while several others were seriously injured. "

"The Transitional Authorities should rather seek to ensure the safety of journal ists and media houses," the communique said.-Panapress
