Horn of Africa: Millions in E. Africa could suffer hunger
Wed. July 16, 2008 09:28 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) A UN food agency says a poor rainy season has damaged crops in large parts of Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.

Although rains increased at the end of the important March-May season, the harvest of the main 2008 cereal crops is expected to be poor, the Food and Agriculture Organization.

Millions in East Africa could suffer hunger from the combination of poor harvests, rising food prices and civil unrest, according to the Rome-based agency.

One of the most serious cases is Somalia, where, after two below-average seasons, the main crop is expected to be a failure.

Some 2.6 million people are already in need of aid and the agency estimates the number could grow to 3.5 million, about half the population, by year's end.-Canadian Press
