Wed. July 23, 2008 04:21 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) As part of an effort to strengthen security in Puntland's regions which was deteriorating lately, businessmen in Puntland regional administration have donated equipment and vehicles to Puntland police force.

A source said the ten vehicles would be used by the police for patrols, as well as, for transporting prisoners.

Meanwhile recent UN report on Somalia says that Puntland's security was getting out of control.

Police officers who spoke on behalf of Puntland police force, thanked the businessmen for the donation, saying that traders do feel the pain of insecurity in the region. The officers stressed that if peace was not maintained, every one would be affected.

The vehicles and the equipment would be distributed to various police departments after evaluating security situation of the regions, as well as, the needs of their police stations.

Since its inception, security in Puntland was reliable, however, it has been deteriorating in recent times, especially in Mudug Region.

Puntland considers itself as an autonomous state within Somalia. In 1969, when Somalia's government was toppled in a coup d'état, years of war and chaos followed. An unsuccessful invasion of Ethiopia followed the Soviet Union's change of support from Somalia to Ethiopia, caused by the rise of a pro-Soviet government in Ethiopia.-Mareeg online
