Somalia: 7 civilians killed in central Somalia’s heavy shelling-witnesses Thu. July 24, 2008 05:24 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) Witnesses and local residents in Somlai said some seven civilians including have been killed and almost 12 others were wounded Sunday after artillery shells and bullets hit residential areas in Beledweyne town the provincial capital of Hiran region following renewed fighting between insurgent fighters and Ethiopian troops.
"Three of the civilians died when a shell hit as they entered their home," an eyewitness in Howlwadaag village in Beledweyne town who requested anonymity told Mareeg online. "More than five other people were injured in our neighborhood BM-shells rained all over the place."
Sabriye Hassan, another witness confirmed the figure but added that two more children from the same family died when a shell landed close to where they were.
The shelling started shortly after the Ethiopian troops arrived in the town as the Islamist fighters in the town have started to open fire to the troops, residents said.
Of the injured person were in serious condition after they were hit by stray bullets from the battle between Ethiopian troops and rebel fighters.
We are under heavy artillery and tank shelling. The Ethiopians are using whatever forces and material they have," said a man who was fleeing the town.
"This is the heaviest attack we've seen since the war started," the man said.
Spokesman for fighters of the Union of the Islamic Courts Union said they launched "concerted attacks" on Ethiopian army troops and claimed to have caused "huge loses" on them.
The town is in isolated situation as hundreds of residents have started to flee from the town to far jungle areas to survive the deadly raining missiles in the town.
