Somalia: Mogadishu remains stable, people still flee
Tue. April 03, 2007 10:39 am.- By Mohamed Abdi Farah. -

(SomaliNet) The Somalia capital which had seen four day of bloody fighting remained calm for the second day as Somali clan leaders conduct efforts to stem the conflict with the Ethiopian military officials in Mogadishu.

The fighting, which killed at least 381 civilians and wounded 556 others including scores from rival sides stopped but the Ethiopian forces and the Somali insurgents still face off at the frontlines in parts of the capital.

Despite lull in the four day war, people are still fleeing the capital because of not knowing how long the truce will hold.

“Thanks to God, if the fighting stopped but I am still worrying by the time the forces of the two sides are in their positions and not removed from there,” said Habibo Hassan, a mother of five children who returned to her house around Ali-Kamin junction to take away the rest of their belongings.

The bullet-destroyed streets in the capital where the fighting had raged are still empty and no car uses them.

“I don’t believe that Mogadishu crisis will end as far as the Ethiopians stay in the country so my family and I are preparing to move to outside of Somalia like Kenya or Ethiopia for our safety,” Abdulahi Jana, in his 30s told Somalinet. Adding “my hope to stay in my country is vanishing due to endless fighting,”

The Ethiopian forces backed by tanks and helicopters attacked insurgent positions in the capital last week but faced strong resistance.
