African Cup of Nations: South Africa held in 1-1 draw with Angola Thu. January 24, 2008 10:39 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) Substitute Elrio van Heerden's superb late strike earned South Africa a 1-1 draw with Angola in their Group D game in Tamale.
New Manchester United signing Manucho's powerful first-half header appeared to have secured the victory for Angola, but van Heerden's glorious finish gave a fine gloss to a rather uninspiring contest.
After a game start by Angola, South African midfielder Teko Modise stung the gloves of Angola goal-keeper Lama with a well-hit strike from about 30 yards.
A broken finger sustained by regular South Africa stopper Rowen Fernandez had forced their coach Carlos Alberto Parreira to field second-choice custodian Moeneeb Josephs, and after 15 minutes he had to race from his line to deny Flavio Amado.
Flavio took a heavy knock in the ensuing collision, but he returned to set up the opening goal after half an hour.
The Al Ahli frontman dinked a cross into the area from the left and Manucho dived in from a standing start to power a superb header over Josephs and into the net.
South Africa could have equalised almost immediately, but when Lama got nowhere near a right-wing corner Sibusiso Zuma put his header wide of the unguarded goal.
The Bafana Bafana stepped up their search for an equaliser after the break, but for all their endeavour they couldn't find a way through a determined Angolan backline.
And it wasn't until the final 10 minutes that they really began to test Lama, when substitute Thembinkosi Fanteni's fierce shot from outside the box was athletically pushed away.
Moments later South Africa thought they had an equaliser when Aaron Mokoena flicked a header past Lama, but although Manucho managed to hack it off the line, the whistle had already gone for a foul.
South Africa appeared to have run out of ideas when, with three minutes of normal time remaining, substitute van Heerden drifted infield from the right before sending a glorious left-footed shot into the top-right corner from 25 yards.
A game that had been desperately short on incident suddenly sprang to life in injury time.
Both teams went close with strikes from distance, but by then it was too late for either side to muster a decisive break-through.-Eurosport
