Premier League: We don't want Woodgate- Arsenal manager
Mon. January 28, 2008 10:31 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) Arsene Wenger has rubbished claims that Arsenal are the third club bidding to sign Middlesbrough's Jonathan Woodgate.

It had been thought the Gunners were preparing to snatch the centre-back away from north London rivals Tottenham, but Wenger flatly denied they had ever been in contact with Boro.
"I do not know where that story came from," said.

Wenger. "There is no truth in it at all. We have never been in touch with Middlesbrough about Jonathan Woodgate."

Meanwhile, Tottenham and Newcastle have both had £7 million bids accepted for the 28-year-old but Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb revealed on Monday morning that a third club was trying to sign him.

Boro defender appeared set to join Tottenham after coming through a medical on Sunday, with Spurs offering a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan admitted defeat in the chase to sign the 28-year-old on Saturday, seemingly leaving the path free for Juande Ramos to make a welcome addition to his flimsy backline.

But the waters have been muddied by the emergence of a third, unnamed, club although it is not known whether they have made a formal bid or merely enquired about Woodgate.

The former England man is a fans' favourite at his hometown club but, with Boro well-stocked with centre-backs, manager Gareth Southgate feels he is expendable.

The Teesside club also have Emanuel Pogatetz, Robert Huth, David Wheater and Chris Riggott on their books.

Southgate said that the club's other prize asset, winger Stewart Downing would not be sold despite a reported £10 million offer from Tottenham.

"Stewart is not for sale, both myself and the chairman Steve Gibson told him that. He is a very important player for us," said Southgate.-Eurosport
