Premier League: Tottenham’s Defoe joins Benjani at Pompey
Fri. February 01, 2008 02:04 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) Striker Jermain Defoe has rejoined former manager Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth from Tottenham, but Pompey's sale of Benjani to Manchester City fell through.

The deal - for an undisclosed sum - taking Defoe to Fratton Park was thought to be dependent on Benjani's departure to join City, but it did not pan out that way as the minutes ticked down to midnight.

City spokesman Paul Tyrrell told his club's official website: "Due to the late arrival of the player in Manchester, we were unable to complete the transfer."

Redknapp seemed unaware of the collapse as he drove home in the early hours of Friday morning, saying it was a shame that he had left - but expressing joy that he was reunited with Defoe.

"Benji has been terrific for us," he told Sky. "The club has more than doubled its money on him - it's good business.

"[Defoe has] signed. There were no problems with the boy - it was getting all the papers signed.

"It's a long-term deal. We were waiting for the Benjani deal to go through. He is a terrific signing. I am pleased to have him here.

"I signed him as a 15-year-old for West Ham and he was an amazing talent then. He's a terrific goalscorer.

"If you'd said to me five years ago that I'd be signing players like this for this club I wouldn't have believed you.

"He's a sharp little lad anyway and it'll be a tough start on Saturday for him against Chelsea."

Defoe said that he hopes to earn his way back into Fabio Capello's England plans after a frustrating period at Spurs.

Capello left him out of his first international squad to face Switzerland in a friendly next Wednesday.

"I can't wait to be honest," he admitted. "I just want to get my boots on. I'm happy.

"When you are not playing football you can't expect to get in the England squad.

"At the end of the day I haven't been playing football. Hopefully I can play football here and get myself back in there.

"I totally understand [his decision]. I just want to play football and score some goals.

"I want to do well for Portsmouth."-Eurosport
