African Cup of Nations: Egypt to face Ivory Coast in semi-finals
Tue. February 05, 2008 04:21 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) Egypt set clinched they way to semi-final date with the Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals last night after a 2-1 defeat over Angola.

Neither team played with the zest they revealed in the group stages; such was the tactical discipline on show.

The Pharaohs went ahead on 23 minutes. Ismailia’s Hosni Abd Rabou scored his fourth goal of the tournament after Mohamed Aboutrika’s free-kick was adjudged to have been charged down with a hand.

But Angola equalised in sensational fashion just six minutes later, when man-of-the-moment Manucho took the ball in his stride and let fly a net-seeking effort from 35 yards that beat Egyptian goalkeeper Essam Al Hadari all ends up.

But just as the Palancas Negras looked to be in the ascendancy, Amr Zaki scored when the ball fortuitously bounced off his shoulder and looped into the net after Carlos ‘Kali’ Alonso made a mess of an attempted clearance.

Egypt will play the Ivory Coast in the first semi-final on Thursday in what promises to be an almighty rendition of the 2006 Nations Cup final.

The Uganda Cranes are set to play Angola twice in June in back-to-back qualifiers in Group Three of the 2010 Africa Nations Cup/World Cup qualifiers.-New Vision
