Premier League: Liverpool holds Chelsea in 0-0 draw Mon. February 11, 2008 08:10 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) Chelsea missed the chance to move to within a point of Manchester United as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool edged the match in terms of possession but it was a contest virtually devoid of chances as neither keeper had to make a save of note.
The results sees Liverpool move above Aston Villa back into fifth, while Chelsea stay third - three points behind Manchester United and five behind Arsenal who play their game in hand against Blackburn on Monday.
Liverpool bossed the midfield for most of the match but without the injured Fernando Torres they lacked that x-factor in front of goal.
Peter Crouch missed what was perhaps their best chance as he fired wide after a one-two with Ryan Babel in the 18th minute.
The lanky striker also got his head on a few crosses but none of they ever threatened Petr Cech.
Meanwhile, Chelsea did not create a meaningful chance until the 81st minute when John Obi Mikel chipped a ball into the box that Ashley Cole side-footed onto Michael Ballack, with the German then doing well to turn the ball goal bound only to see it go just wide.
The Blues also had a decent penalty shout in the first-half when it appeared that Javier Mascherano had taken down Joe Cole but Mike Riley waved it away.
In fact, it was Riley who caused the biggest cheer of the evening when he fell to the ground while trying to get out of the way of a misplaced pass.
The game was also notable for Frank Lampard's return from injury, but the England international was largely anonymous and taken off before the game reached its inevitable scoreless conclusion.-Eurosport
