Michael Essien's 41st-minute strike was enough to smother Everton's hopes, and the Toffees have now virtually lost all hope of catching Liverpool in fourth - they are now five points adrift of their neighbours, with an inferior goal difference. But the Blues are aware that United must get something at Blackburn on Saturday - or they will be waiting to pounce a week later. Everton boss David Moyes told his club's official website: "I'm disappointed that we didn't take anything, but we didn't play well enough to take anything out of the game. "You never want to lose a goal, but before the break it makes it a little bit more difficult.
