Soccer: Eto'o insists he didn’t threaten to quit Barcelona
Tue. April 22, 2008 07:27 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) Insisting he never threatened to quit the club, Samuel Eto'o, Barcelona striker has sought to clarify the comments he made at the weekend about his future at the Nou Camp.

But Eto'o was quoted as saying he would look to leave Barca if their barren trophy spell continued throughout next season, with the Catalan giants' last piece of major silverware coming back in 2006.

The 27-year-old Cameroon international denied threatening to walk out on the club but admitted to being unhappy over Barca's lean period.

"I am surprised by all this reaction. I want to make it clear that I never threatened to leave Barcelona," he told radio station Cadena SER.

"What I said came at an event with children where I answered questions relaxed and, above all, speaking truthfully.

"This season I have the opportunity to win the Champions League, but if I do not win it and then the coming year I don't win anything either, it will be three years without obtaining anything. A club such as Barca cannot allow that.

"What I said was that I would not feel comfortable playing in a team that signed me to score goals and to win, and I don't manage it. I would not be able to look the fans in the face."
When asked what he would do if asked the same question again, Eto'o said: "I would answer it the same because I cannot lie to a child. I have always been honest and always will be.

"Next year I will be at Barcelona. I hope to start next season at my best level because during the last two seasons injuries have affected me. I hope to be able to help the team improve and that, all being well, we can win many things."

On where he might like to end up if and when he does decide to leave Barca, Eto'o admitted his only likely destinations would be either to return to former club Real Mallorca or go abroad.

"When I said that I had reached the top, I wanted to say that after Barca I would not want to play in Spain. I would only go to Mallorca," he added.

"If I leave Barcelona I will not play for any other Spanish team apart from Mallorca. For example, I will never play with Real Madrid."
