Rugby: Uganda beats Kenya in first leg in Kampala
Mon. May 26, 2008 08:46 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) The Kenyan national team and the seven-a-side team failed to click in their crucial international assignments in what was a repeat of last year’s first leg.

Kenya succumbed 3-20 to bolshie Uganda at Kyadondo in Kampala, making the return leg in Kenyan capital Nairobi on August 16 a tricky encounter since they will have a 17-point deficit to erase.

At the same time, Kenya’s London Sevens dream of finishing in a strong fifth position in the International Rugby Board (IRB) World Sevens series, was dashed after they lost all their Pool D matches to Russia, Scotland and Samoa and slumped to the bowl category on Saturday.

In Kampala, the Kenyans were far from convincing. Last year, Kenya over-ran a 19-point shortfall to humble the Ugandans 35-15 and reclaim the Elgon Cup in Nairobi.

It was a spirited rally by the Kenyans, who had lost 10-29 in Kampala in the first leg.

Besides, the memories of last year’s Africa Cup are still fresh.

Their hopes of clinching its first major continental title came tumbling down, when they went down 12-24 to a revamped Ugandan side in the semi-final in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

The Michael “Tank” Otieno side eventually settled for bronze, after stopping Cote d’Ivoire 20-18, while Uganda clinched the trophy, beating hosts Madagascar 42-11 in the final.-Daily Nation
