World Cup qualifier: FIFA suspends match between Sudan and Chad over tension
Thu. May 29, 2008 07:13 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -

(SomaliNet) Following recent tensions between the two African countries, this weekend's World Cup qualifier between Sudan and Chad has been postponed because of, FIFA announced on Thursday.

Soccer’s world governing body agreed to suspend the tie which was due to be played in Omdurman, Sudan on Saturday, until further notice.

"In view of the current situation between Sudan and Chad, FIFA has decided to suspend the 2010 FIFA World Cup preliminary competition game between Sudan and Chad, which was originally scheduled to be played on 31 May 2008," a FIFA statement said.

"This case will be submitted shortly to the Bureau of the Organising Committee for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, which will pass a final decision on the fate of this match and on any other possible measures in line with the regulations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa."

Sudan and Chad share a common border but relations between the two countries have become strained in recent times.

Earlier this month, Sudan cut diplomatic relations with Chad, blaming its neighbour for an attack on the capital Khartoum which killed more than 200 people.

Chad denies responsibility and has accused Sudan of masterminding rebel attacks on them in the past.

The two teams were drawn in the same World Cup qualifying group along with Mali and the Congo. –Reuters
