Lebanon: 2 dead, 30 wounded as fighting continues in Lebanon Tue. June 24, 2008 07:34 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) The head of Lebanon's security forces said at least 2 people were killed and 30 people were wounded in sectarian fighting between Sunni and Alawite Muslim gunmen in Lebanon's northern port city of Tripoli on Tuesday.
“The situation is critical,” Major General Ashraf Reefi, said in an interview from Beirut. A third person may have been killed, Reefi said.
Dubai-based Al Arabiya television showed gunmen firing machine guns and others carrying rocket propelled grenades while some residents in the area of the fighting were shown fleeing.
Sources say the fighting took place in the Bab Al Tebana district of Tripoli between supporters of the Sunni majority and Alawites, who are allied with Syria.
The outbreak of violence comes almost a month after Lebanese lawmakers ended an 18-month political crisis between the Western-backed coalition of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and the Shiite Hezbollah-led opposition, supported by Iran and Syria.-Bloomberg
