(SomaliNet) Iran’s government daily Iran reported on Thursday that Iran hanged a woman and four men for murder in the capital's Evin prison, brining the number of those executed to at least 180 in 2008, according to an AFP count.
According to the the paper said, the woman, identified only by her first name Shabnam, was convicted of stabbing her husband to death after learning that he wanted to divorce her and marry a younger woman.
Two of the men, identified as Amin and Vahid, were found guilty of murdering taxi drivers.
A third identified as Majid was convicted of killing a five-year-old boy during a robbery, while the fourth, Najaf, was found guilty of killing his brother-in-law in a family dispute.
According to Amnesty International, Iran applied the death penalty more than any other country apart from China last year, executing 317 people.
Capital offences in the Islamic republic include murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery. –Agencies
