Saudi Arabia: Amnesty condemns rise in Saudi Arabian executions Tue. October 14, 2008 03:58 am.- By Bonny Apunyu. -
(SomaliNet) Amnesty International says there has been an alarming rise in the number of executions carried out in Saudi Arabia. Last year 158 people were executed, four times as many as in 2006.
Saudi Arabia applies a strict version of sharia, or Islamic law. The death penalty is imposed for rape, murder, robbery and drug dealing. People who renounce Islam may also be liable to execution.
Many of those executed are immigrants who speak no Arabic, or people who are unable to afford legal representation. So far this year the country has carried out 71 executions.-RNW.
