(SomaliNet) At least six police officers were killed along with 18 Taliban insurgents during an attack on a police post on the outskirts of Lashkar Gah, capital of the southern province of Helmand.
The incident was the latest in a series of attacks targeting police posts in the town. At the weekend, at least 60 rebels were killed as the Afghan army and NATO soldiers repelled Taliban attacks.
On Tuesday night, airstrikes left about 70 insurgents dead in Helmand province, close to the border with Pakistan.
Fighting has been increasing steadily in Afghanistan over the last few months and levels of violence have not been this high since the Taliban government was toppled in 2001.
On Tuesday, the United Nations said that 3800 people, one-third of them civilians, had been killed in Afghanistan during the first seven months of 2008. –RNW.
