Walaahi I am sick and tired of this nation of preachers, hypocrites and faith abusers.
That is what Somalis are. You cannot engage in a conversation with a Somali online, on the street or at home without getting involved in religion. I wouldn’t mind if the preacher is a pious person who has gained a degree in Islamic studies or someone who at least commands a life that is based on the teachings of islam.

Somalis abuse Islam. It is the bogeyman to be called on when there is an intellectual bankruptcy. You will meet a murderer, a thief, a drug add, qat addict, a welfare cheat etc invoke the Islamic card when caught red handed. Islam comes into contention when logic fails, as a last resort to silence someone.

It is well accepted that there is such a thing as a Waliyallah, someone who is of nearness and closeness to Allah. Some have attributed supernatural events happening due to this nearness with Allah. Yet, some also deny miracles happening. What is the role of wali's in Islam in relationship to the muslim ummah?

It depends on which version? If you speak of the Sufi mystic Wali system then it is nothing more than a political disguise to steal people's money, in essence it is 100% fraud. It was designed as a scheme to generate income from the ignorant masses. The perpetrators are very smart for conning the general public for very long, especially since this was a phenomenon that occured not only in Somalia but all over the Muslim World. Guys who wear long robes, with eyes cast on the floor carrying rosary beads who always have companions kissing their hands is the clearest sign of this fraud.
I personally admire the wit and cunning, even though their practice is and always was detestable to say the least but the fact that they convinced so many that their link to Allah is of a more superior and supernatural level than others is impressive to say the least. However like all false things, it must come to an end and it's slow demise came with the birth of Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab (ra) which leads me to inform you of the correct uderstanding.

Allah Himself talks about the what it is to be a Wali of Allah, He says: "Indeed the Awliya of Allah shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.... Those who believe and who are conscience (of their Lord)." (Surah Yunus).

It's actually pretty simple, a Wali of Allah is someone who believes and fears Him... khalas. The equation is actually that simple. And this is the understanding that was given by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab much to the detriment and anger of the Sufis. But it still baffles me how this simple formula was turned into a systematic institution of accumulating wealth for generations via deciet and cunning. Very impressive but alas, the Wahhabis won

A wali has to fulfill certain requirements, that is a muslim, one that follows the shariah to the t in private and public, has courtesy with allah and muslims. And then still he maybe just a really good believer but may not be a wali, which is known to Allah. But if someone claims to be so, and does not fulfill the requirements then he isn't one.
