thank you all for your input 8)

Gedo,

i agree there's nothing wrong with acknowledging the day of your wedding. i would also agree with those in opposition to the idea if the notion exceeds beyond acknowledging and giving thanks. with gaalo dhaqan, its a bit more commercial than that where the female is expecting lavish gifts..and the poor dude is burdened every time he thinks of it(which prolly explains why most gaalo dudes forget about their anniversary date.lol)

naila,

thnx girl. and don't bother with basra. according to her, i'm basically everyone here.

basra,

looking forward to your parody dear.

helwaa,

Celebrating anything besides the holidays the messenger prescribed is an innovation. Why do you have to take your wife to fancy restaurant and buy gifts just because its an anniversary. You can take your wife anywhere you want and make her happy any day of the year but why is it your imitating the kuffar by doing it a specific day. We as muslims shouldn't imitate the kuffar.

Ryan that is hilarioooous!

r u serious???

First of all, i am not cold, i am just bold. :) Second of all, we are somalis, not gaalos. Embrace your norms, part of being somali is this delicious idea of fresh savagery that sparkles from baidabo to the streets of western civilization city. Somali women r the strongest, hard working women in the world. they are also realists who see the world for what it is. Marriage should only be for the procreation purposes. Have babies- approach middle age and kick him out. In turn he will get the clue and he will go find himself a fresh 17 year old habibti to continue the circle of procreation. This 'aspiring' u talk of Ryan is a figment of an exaggerated fantasy. You and Zulaika need somali reality 101!

Basra

I quite disagree with you. I don't need to take any courses. What is wrong with having a successful marriage and in fact reaching a golden anniversary (which is 50 years I believe)? If you bring your "garoob" mentality into the marriage, you will surely ended up being a "garoob". So look forward to the lonely years ahead

zulaika,

Well, yeah that would fall into the category of 'ritualizing' the event, and expecting gifts is essentially imposing the holiday. And since expecting gifts is the gaalo daqan, that is wholesale copy of a holiday.
