Somalis have such a reer baadiye mentality when it comes to education. His chances aren't limited. If anything, the social sciences enable him to have a more open career path; in addition, once you enter a top school, you can argue that the degree isn't as important as the school's name recognition with employers. Any degree from Oxford won't "limit" his chances, especially if he networks correctly. Do you know who studied political science and economics at Oxford? Prime Ministers, parliament members. Do you know who attends Oxford? The children of the elite. As long as he keeps his head up and shakes a few choice hands, he'll do very well for himself.FarahWithFlare wrote:FAH1223 wrote:isn't Oxford like Harvard? He could have done better in Engineering or Other science fields.
His chances can be limited later on with the political science degree and economics.

Also, degrees in social sciences and humanities aren't limited to a specific field. I know a guy who graduated with a degree in African/African-American Studies who's currently working as a financial analyst at a top company, and a girl who majored in English and is now a consultant at a respected firm; both landed these jobs directly after graduation. Degrees that aren't in science teach you how to write coherently and argue concisely, which are honestly viable traits because most people can barely piece intelligent sentences together, let alone articulate intentions in a smart manner. (Have you ever attempted to edit a science major's paper? Half of them can't even spell "because" correctly, forget about writing a decent sentence.)
All in all, if you're smart and driven, you could literally have a degree in studio art and end up working on Wall Street.

Re: Somali teen headed to Oxford University
thinking that social science degrees are limiting is not reer baadiye, poor use of that phrase. social science degrees obviously aren't lucrative (unless you become a successful lawyer) so when someone says they are limiting they are talking about money. science degrees are the way to go if you're trying to earn that buck. social science degrees are more rewarding in an academic sense i.e people who get them usually go on to be teachers, professors, write books, or go on to even higher learning.
it all really comes down to what this kid is passionate about. he's passionate about social sciences so he should definitely pursue that path but if he was unsure of what he wanted to study then he might as well have gotten an engineering degree and hook his family up with some $$$
What is truly reer baadiye is depending on connections and thinking "it doesn't matter what you major in, you'll get the connections." Yeah okay, just downplay the importance of your major because of the selectivity of your school. thats reaallllll smart

Herdonhomer,
I am not going to address your point about how social science degrees as not marketable since I dont have a social science degree and I wouldn't be in a position to argue about that. What I am going to call you out on is how you said is it reer badiye to depend on connections. YOU HAVE TO DEPEND ON CONNECTIONS 110% regardless of your field of study or you will be searching for a job like a dog for at least 6 months.
I can't believe you just said that. What an ignorant thing to say.

Kimjongill,
don't get me wrong, i'm not against the idea of using connections. What i'm against and think is reer baadiye is blindly entering college unconcerned with what you're majoring in with the mentality "it doesn't matter what i major in, my connections will take care of me." that's the point i'm against. FAH made it in page one
major choice shouldn't be taken lightly, no matter what school you go to.
