Somalia is a majority Muslim country which, under successive constitutions starting from th day of independence, has identified Islam as the state religion. No, I do not believe another religion should share equality with Islam in Somalia although other practitioners should have the right to worship as they see fit.
You cannot compare Somalia to Western countries whose modern concept of being a Republic was born as a result of resisting the Catholic church. Diffferent history, traditions, and values. At the heart of this issue is freedom to worship not cultural supplantation of the secular Western variety. Study cultural relativism. I recently read an interview with Condoleezza Rice describing even the neocon acceptance of these divergent realities and where convergence points should be pursued imstead of cultural imperialism (not exactly her words but certainly the reading of it).
Somalia as a modern nation-state was created (or at the very least heavily influenced) by the west. The parliament, the constitution, the political parties, the national anthem, etc are all the result of Somalis copying the ‘Western countries modern concept of being a Republic’. So if you’re worried about cultural supplantation, my friend, you’re a century too late as Western culture has already swept the Muslim World and Somalia in particular. You are also no doubt aware that a great deal of Somalia’s current leadership was educated in the west and even hold western passports, that a sizable community of Somalis live in the west and continue to benefit Somalia politically and economically, and that the treasury of the government of Somalia is heavily funded by the western countries. Somalia can identify as a Muslim nation, just like the U.K identifies as a Christian nation, but as a member of the international community that is dependent on the help of the international community to survive, it must ensure human rights and dignities. Even human rights and dignities Somalis have not yet as a people come to accept. Progress is being made, like the 30% women quota in parliament, and after Al Shabab is totally obliterated there will be no doubt even greater pressure on Somalia’s leadership to purge society of ignorant cultural values.
